Hartlepool Life reported last week how the town was taking the ‘fantastic opportunity’ to be named UK Town of Culture 2028 but, sadly, it failed to make the shortlist which does include neighbouring Stockton-on-Tees.
Town residents took to social media on hearing the news with Nigel McLoughlin saying “This is a real shame. I thought Hartlepool was in with a real shout.” and Larry Giddens commented: “I know there was some strong competition but it’s sad we haven’t even made the shortlist” and Neil McAllister added: “Stockton is in but Hartlepool isn’t – what have they got that we haven’t?”
If Hartlepool had won, the town would have received £3 million to deliver a major cultural programme throughout 2028
The prize would have boosted economic growth and opportunity in Hartlepool, celebrated local culture and creativity, and given more people the chance to engage with the arts.
As part of its bid, a digital postcard, “An Alien’s Guide to Hartlepool: A Town of Culture”, was placed on the official UK Town of Culture map.
Created by Milo, a student from The Northern School Of Art, it explores Hartlepool’s people, places and spaces through the eyes of an intergalactic visitor.
