Tayler, 14, has achieved what once seemed impossible thanks to her determination and resilience – along with the dedicated support of her Learn to Swim instructor Ben White at Hartlepool Borough Council’s Active Hartlepool service.
Just three years ago, the teenager was unable to complete the 25‑metre swim required at primary school but has now not only successfully completed both Discovery Diver and Ocean Diver certifications but is also certified to drive a boat and has an open water swim qualification.
Tayler can scuba dive independently to depths of up to 20 metres and recently fulfilled a lifelong dream by snorkelling and scuba diving on holiday in the Maldives.
Her journey has, quite rightly, been described as “extraordinary.”
At just seven-years-old, Tayler was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney cancer and underwent high‑toxicity chemotherapy. While lifesaving, the treatment had lasting effects — impacting her heart, causing nerve damage, and worsening issues with proprioception which affects the body’s ability to sense movement and position. The teenager is also dyslexic and finds it challenging to take in and retain information.
Her mum, Chelsea, introduced Tayler to swimming instructor Ben who – from their very first session – recognised Tayler’s individual needs and adapted his teaching approach to suit her.
Rather than relying solely on verbal instruction, Ben modelled movements, demonstrated techniques, and carefully paced sessions — knowing when to push and when to pause due to the teenager’s heart condition. The result was swimming lessons that were fun, engaging and confidence‑building – and something Tayler looked forward to every single week.
“Watching Tayler’s confidence in the water grow has been incredible. After everything she’s been through, it’s been a privilege to see her enjoying herself, believing in herself, and doing so well,” said Ben.
Chelsea paid tribute to her daughter’s instructor, describing Ben as “an amazing teacher and a real asset to the Active Hartlepool team”.
“Ben treats every learner as an individual,” she said. “He understands exactly how to motivate them and brings out the very best in his students.”
Tayler’s progress — from reluctant swimmer to confident diver in just two years — is a powerful example of what can be achieved through personalised coaching, patience and belief.
Her story highlights not only Tayler’s resilience and determination, but also Active Hartlepool’s commitment to inclusive, supportive swimming programmes that help young people of all abilities thrive in the water.
Councillor Rob Darby, chair of Hartlepool Borough Council’s Housing, Growth and Communities Committee, said: “Tayler’s achievement is nothing short of remarkable. After overcoming significant challenges at a young age, her determination, resilience and positive attitude have enabled her to achieve something that once seemed beyond reach. She is an inspiration to everyone in Hartlepool and a wonderful example of what can be achieved when courage and hard work are matched by high-quality support.”
He added: “I would also like to congratulate Ben White and the Active Hartlepool team, whose dedication to providing inclusive opportunities is helping young people develop confidence, skills and a lifelong love of being active.”
