William, who has studied at Northallerton PLC for the past two years, was honoured with the “Most Improved Learner” award in recognition of his “resilience and kindness” throughout his learning.
The North Yorkshire-based learning college covers subjects from maths to English as well as helping attendees develop key skills such as baking – a particular favourite of William’s.
Whilst studying, William became known for regularly helping staff and challenging himself to try new experiences.
William is a resident at Hope House, on Hutton Avenue, which is part of the Cygnet Social Care division and is a residential care service for adults with learning disabilities.
He was described as being “over the moon” at being nominated and embraced the recognition with great pride, even purchasing a new outfit ahead of the awards ceremony!
“The nomination alone was a tremendous recognition of the dedication, commitment, and progress he has shown throughout his learning journey,” explained Jamie Speight, Service Manager at Hope House.
“On the day, he was both surprised and delighted when his name was announced as the winner. While the result came as a shock to him, it was thoroughly deserved and a testament to the hard work, resilience, and determination he has demonstrated over time.”
When William first joined Northallerton PLC two years ago, he struggled to connect with others or engage in learning. Thanks to the support of staff, the Cygnet Social Care resident is now far more confident and soon began taking an active part in college life.
“This achievement highlights the positive impact that perseverance and a willingness to learn can have, and we could not be prouder of what he has accomplished,” continued Jamie. “William’s success is an inspiration to others and a wonderful reminder of what can be achieved with commitment and self-belief.”
Whilst recognising William for his achievement, Northallerton PLC said: “William is a kind and supportive friend, regularly helps staff and enjoys meeting people in the community. He has also challenged himself to try new experiences, including indoor climbing.”
