Good plants to divide now include: alchemilla, spring-flowering geraniums, geums, primulas, Siberian iris and hostas.
Dig around the plant with a spade or fork then lift from the soil and place on a sheet of plastic. Knock off excess soil so the rootball is easier to handle.
Remove outer sections, which is younger and more vigorous and discard the older woody centre. Plants with fiborous roots can often be gently pulled apart by hand.
If roots are more densely packed, insert two forks into the rootball, back-to-back, and lever the plant apart. Hosta roots can be tough, so use an old bread knife or saw to slice through the rootball.
Replant each section, adding compost at the base. Firm in and water well. Remember to keep watering if the weather stays dry.
