They come in many shapes and sizes and colours, so you are sure to find one right for your borders.
They are the quintessential autumn flower and are hard to beat for brightening borders that are looking a bit sad.
Their daisy-like blooms arrive just as many summer flowers are fading. New England asters (Symphyotrichum movae-angeliae) produce masses of purple flowers with sunny yellow centres from August to October. They’re perennial and like full sun to partial shade.
CATMINT (Nepeta) is another one of those plants that earns its place in the garden several times over. Its aromatic grey-green foliage is topped by spikes of blue-purple flowers, and established plants tolerate drought and less-than-perfect soil.
Cutting off faded flowers can encourage fresh growth and another round of blooms, helping extend the show later in the season. Likes full sun and well-drained soil, however, it does tolerate clay sand and rocky soils.
