And as he cut the ribbon, the stage and screen star proclaimed that the theatre group’s production of Hamlet here “will be the most important theatrical event in the UK this year.”
Well, the acclaimed thespian is not wrong!
Ensemble ‘84 must commence for bringing Hamlet to Horden, especially tackling this rarely performed First Quarto text of Shakespeare’s tragedy.
This striking new staging brings a shorter, urgent version, combining powerful storytelling with live music, song and movement.
The Playhouse is a wonderful, intimate venue, with the audience upfront and central as the play is performed in the round by the cast.
And perform they do, as they relish delivering the The Bard’s powerful dialogue of one of the most enduring plays ever written, especially the play’s most famous line “To be or not to be, that is the question”.
At the end, the ensemble was given a rousing and fully deserved standing ovation. This cultural event in our area is one you must definitely not miss.
The Tragicall Historie of Hamlet runs until Saturday 6 June.
