The supplier claims the move will help residents keep an eye on how much water they are using and could save them money.
The smart meters, which are fitted free of charge, will also help the water company spot leaks. In an email to customers, Anglian Water says it wants to help them choose what is right for residents – but nothing changes unless they are given the go-ahead.
Anglian Water says it will take less than an hour to fit a smart meter, adding that the householder does not have to be at home and, although there will be a brief interruption, customers will be informed when the job is finished. If they need access to homes, an appointment will be made in advance.
