The accident – which involved a white Volvo xc60 and a black Peugeot Expert van – happened at 9:48pm on Monday, 21 September, near to the junction with Cleveland Road.
The driver of the Volvo fled the scene but was located later by police.
The 66-year-old driver of the Peugeot van was trapped inside his vehicle and had to be freed by Cleveland Fire Brigade. He was taken to hospital in Middlesbrough with breaks to both legs and an injury to his lung.
The 31-year-old driver of the Volvo was taken to hospital in Stockton with lacerations to both knees.
A 31-year-old man was later arrested on suspicion of aggravated vehicle taking, causing serious injury by dangerous driving, failing to provide a sample, driving without a licence and no insurance.
