Daniel Barker will be tackling the gruelling 147 miles over five days in the Ultra X Jordan in extreme temperatures of up to 34C.
The 40-year-old hopes his amazing challenge will raise £10,000 for Hartlepool Alice House Hospice, an institution, he says, which is a major cause for the town.
Daniel said: “The hospice has a lot of good people who do really important work for people in Hartlepool. They rely on charitable donations to continue their work, and hopefully, raising £10,000 will help them to do so. It’s an epic challenge, across deserts and valleys in the footsteps of Lawrence of Arabia, which, I hope, will inspire people to make donations to the hospice, which is such a good cause.”
Daniel, who is a member of Hartlepool Rovers rugby club, is training for the challenge with the help of the club physio and Hartlepool Life columnist, Buster Gallagher.
“I just turned 40 years of age – they say life begins then, but I’m not sure your knees do,“ joked Daniel. “I am training in a sauna suit to replicate the hot temperatures, but I think the main thing will be dehydration. I’ve got Buster in my corner to help me get into shape for it, so I hope people will make donations, no matter how small, and it will all count.”
Rovers will host a fundraising leaving party for Daniel in September before he leaves for Jordan later in the month.
