Add plenty of organic matter to the patch, plus a dressing of general fertiliser.
You can grow these beans in pots at least 30cm wide and deep, but use a potting compost with plenty of loam, something like John Innes No 2 and make sure you keep on top of the watering. Make a teepee frame and place the plants inside the frame.
The plants grow rapidly with a large leaf canopy, and by the time the beans are ready for picking, they are heavy and vulnerable to toppling over in the wind, so make sure the supports are driven at least 30cm into the ground.
You can sow seeds directly in the garden now, at the base of a support. This later crop will keep you in beans well until the autumn.
Start picking the crop as soon as the pods are forming – the more you pick the more that will follow.
