Mak Davis, originally from Seaton Carew, was delighted when his dark fantasy novel, The Sundering Cycle, won the Judges’ Choice Award at the White Rose International Film Festival, in the Book to Screen category.
He said: “The book began as a personal passion project nearly a decade ago and has since grown into a wider fantasy setting that includes short stories, future novels, tabletop gaming projects, and a growing online audience. Seeing it recognised at the international film festival level has been a huge milestone, especially as an independent creator from Hartlepool who started the project on the notes app of an iPhone 4S!”
The book centres around Arken, who was born in an insignificant town and raised in the shadow of his father, Eirik. The youngster always wanted more – to step out of his father’s shadow and carve his name in history, at any cost. He eventually flees his home, taking Clawsever – his father’s prized sword – with him. On his journey, he finds himself face to face with scheming dwarves, feral elves, orcs, sages and saints. Most pose a threat, but none more so than the voice inside his head.”
