Steven Streeting, 50, suffered a serious head injury at about 3am on Church Street, in Hartlepool, and died in hospital on Tuesday.
A man has since appeared in court charged with Mr Streeting’s murder and attempted GBH.
In a statement, Steven’s family said: “Steven was a much-loved son, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend but, above all else, a devoted husband and loving father. He will be deeply missed by his family and by all who knew and loved him.”
It added: “At this extremely difficult time, the family are supporting one another, while being assisted by specially trained officers from Cleveland Police. We kindly ask that our privacy be respected as we grieve and try to come to terms with our loss.”
Aaron John Hopper, 32, of the town’s Winterbottom Avenue, appeared before Teesside Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 29 May charged with murder and attempted grievous bodily harm.
He was remanded in custody until his next court appearance.
A second man, aged 49, was also treated after the incident and was later discharged.
