A GIRLS’ football team, crowned national champions at Wembley, has received a civic accolade to add to its trophy cabinet.
Sacred Heart primary school Girls Under 11 team won the National League Trust Road To Wembley Tournament at the world-famous stadium.
To mark the occasion, the Ceremonial Mayor of Hartlepool Councillor Sue Little welcomed the girls to Civic Centre to present them with a special Certificate of Achievement as proud headteacher Amanda Palmer and team coach Gareth Foreman looked on.
Amanda said: “The girls showed dedication and great sportsmanship throughout the tournament and we are so proud that they came home as national champions. To now receive this award from the Mayor is the icing on the cake.”
Also attending the ceremony to add their congratulations were the Leader of the Council Councillor Graham Harrison, the Deputy Lieutenant of County Durham Dr Kate Gillen and the Mayor’s Consort Paul Little.
Councillor Little added: “This was an incredible achievement – the girls have brought great honour to Hartlepool and we are exceptionally proud of them.”
Councillor Harrison said: “They are fantastic young sportswomen and are an absolute inspiration to all our young people.”
The final marked 26 years since Hartlepool had a successful primary school team make it to this stage of the competition.
