The Lock Gates, at Hartlepool Marina, has been a staple for customers in town and is best known for its breakfasts and Sunday dinners.
The owners posted an announcement on social media, prompting many longstanding customers to voice their support and sadness.
One person said: “I am so sad and disappointed that you’re closing. This was not only one of the best cafes in town but also one with decent prices. No other place will do baguettes like yours. I’m so sad to see you close but I wish you well.”
Another customer said: “We found you just after lockdown and were blown away with how friendly and welcoming you all were.
The food was always amazing, and we always came away with a smile on our faces.”
In their post, the owners said running the café had been one of their “greatest achievements” and that it had become a community hub over the years.
They said they are looking forward to a slower pace of life but thanked customers for making the café “incredibly special”.
They added: “While I am looking forward to having time to rest and enjoy life at a slower pace, please know that we all will miss being part of your daily routine. Thank you for choosing to spend time in The Lock Gates and for making the café so incredibly special. Thank you again to all our customers past and present for all your support – we could not have done it without you all. From Ken, Shane and all the staff at The Lock Gates.”
