Everyone’s favourite serial killer returns with the Second Season of DEXTER – RESURRECTION (Paramount +) which finds the good, bad guy who only murders even worse guys (if you follow!) suffering from a bit of a mid-life crisis.
“He’s not buying a fancy car and I think he’s forsaken the idea that he has any business having a girlfriend,” star Michael C. Hall told UPI at New York’s Comic Con. “But he is experiencing a desire to be acknowledged, to be recognised, to be appreciated. We all come to that point but, for a character like him, it’s a pretty dicey proposition.”
Needless to say the show is as slick as ever with big screen actors Brian Cox and Dan Stevens joining Jack Alcott (who plays Dexter’s son Harrison) and Uma Thurman in the cast.
Meanwhile the return of Jackson Lamb’s oddball, “spy” team in SLOW HORSES (Apple TV) has become even more thrilling with all the talk of Jack Lowden – who plays the well meaning but hopeless River Cartwright – being a strong contender to become the next James Bond!
Season 6 finds the team in even more bother as a third party suddenly starts bumping previous “joes” off!
The show’s undoubted star Gary Oldman – who seems to get better and even grimier as the burned-out former “spook” Lamb – thinks the latest series is more personal for his character.
He told Deadline: “I think the investment in the situation they find themselves in at the 11th hour where someone comes in and pushes a nuclear button. Every season has that sort of race. But with this one he takes the attacks more personally, I think, because his horses are being targeted. So there’s a bit more fire underneath.”
And the good news is “Slow Horses” WILL be coming back for a seventh season – but will River still be part of the team or will he be trying out expensive dinner jackets? I guess we’ll just have to wait and see!
Sticking with death and destruction – although in a lovelier format – RETURN TO PARADISE (BBC1, Friday, 7.30pm and iPlayer) – is back for Season 3 with a special “double bill”.
Following the shocking departure of pathologist Glenn Strong (Tai Hara), Mack (Anna Samson) throws herself into her workload alongside the ever-faithful Senior Constable, Colin Cartwright (Lloyd Griffith). Mack and Colin find themselves untangling some of Dolphin Cove’s most impossible murders: an artist stabbed in full view of an audience; a wildlife worker killed in a locked cage and a famous film director shot at her own screening. But the biggest and most perplexing mystery of all will be Mack’s own heart.
Anna said of her character: “She takes me by surprise all the time. I know her so well and yet it is rare that I’ve predetermined her response to something. Something will annoy her that I didn’t expect or something will make her laugh that I didn’t expect. That’s a beautiful experience for an actor that the homework’s done, but you’re going with instinct on camera rather than predetermined choices. She’s always been kind, but she has a second thought before she says and does things that she wouldn’t have in the first or second series. That shows Colin’s influence on her. When Mack does something unexpectedly considerate or kind, whether it be in dialogue or in action, that surprises me, and I think it probably surprises her as well.”
But she’s certainly enjoying Australia’s wonderful wildlife!
“I loved the koalas,” she laughed. “I was meant to hold a koala, but unfortunately, you need a licence to hold a koala in Australia. But they are such phenomenal animals. We take them for granted in Australia because we have such amazing wildlife. But when you’re that close to a koala, you cannot believe it’s real. It looks like a teddy bear that’s come alive – they’re incredible. The wildlife park keeper was very protective of the koala as well, we all felt like the koala and her keeper were number one on the call-sheet that day and we were the guest actors in their show!”
Well that’s it for now – catch you next week for some more TV chatter and – if you’re “out and about” on Bonfire Night – stay safe!
