Friends step out for 11th year running to support breast cancer care charity

Nine ladies from Hartlepool and Stockton have just got together yet again to take on their yearly trek from Hartlepool Marina to Seaton Carew. This year they were also accompanied by Milli the dog. Their latest walk raised £1,255.30 to support the breast unit at the University Hospital of North Tees – a cause close to the group’s heart.

Some members of the group have previously received care from the Stockton-based unit but all have been affected by breast cancer in some way. Their donation will be used to refurbish one of the unit’s waiting areas for future patients receiving breast care

Walk organiser Val Kitching said: “This is our 11th year. We are always amazed by the generosity of those who donate to this service within our local hospitals. Thank everyone who donated to this essential service, and a special thank you to the Choral Interlude choir who contributed a fantastic £250. We all know somebody who has had cancer or we’ve been affected ourselves. We just want to give something back.”

Four ladies from the group visited the breast unit to present their cheque and share their thanks. They also visited the waiting area that will benefit from their donation.

Walker Elaine Smith added: “It’s stressful coming to this department and waiting and wondering what’s going on. If we can make that waiting area a little more relaxed and comfortable, then every step we take is worthwhile.”

Breast care nurse Harriet Anderson said: “We are incredibly grateful to Val, Elaine and everyone involved in this year’s walk. Coming to a breast clinic can be an anxious and emotional time, so creating a more comfortable and welcoming environment really does make a difference. Thanks to this generous donation, we’ll be able to improve one of our waiting areas for future patients and their loved ones.”

She added: “On behalf of the whole breast care team, thank you to all the walkers, donors and also their supporters who continue to champion our cancer services year after year.”
