Head coach Lee Clark resigned just minutes after Saturday’s 3-1 defeat by Worthing at Victoria Park – the team’s sixth loss in nine matches and one which left them 19th in the table and a mere point above the bottom four.
The 53-year-old endured chants of “You’re getting sacked in the morning” from home fans during the second half and a further angry reaction at full-time.
At just nine league matches, he becomes the joint second shortest-serving permanent manager of the modern era, level with Paul Hartley, with only Richard Money having left sooner (after six games).
Clark had vowed to fight on in recent interviews, but Saturday’s noise from the stands and terraces prompted an instant departure.
“I wanted to give this club and these fans something to be proud of and what they deserve,” said Clark. “I haven’t been able to do that unfortunately. You heard the reaction of the fans, and that’s not going to change.”
Pools sent out a brief statement after Clark’s resignation, saying: “We would like to thank Lee for his service during his time at the club and wish him every success for the future. A further update will be provided in due course.”
