Applications to become one of the five are now open for creative talents who live or work in the region.
A spokesperson said: “Tees Valley Artists of the Year was launched in 2024 and is aimed at exceptional creatives who have a body of original work and professional recognition, and would benefit from targeted support to make a difference to their careers. This could mean selling work to national markets, touring a first major show or laying the groundwork to break onto the international stage.”
They added: “Incumbent Artist of the Year Finn Forster has toured with Stereophonics, while 2024 Artist of the Year Lisette Auton was invited to Number 10 Downing Street on publishing her new book last year. Visual artist Will Hughes also successfully launched new venture Sawdust – a creative fabrication workshop.”
Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said: “We know Hartlepool, Teesside and Darlington are packed with talent but too many artists have found it hard to access the links, help and opportunities that can take their work to the next level. By backing our Tees Valley Artists of the Year, we give them the time, space, support and success to turn ambition into real success and show just how powerful a voice we have.”
He added: “Our region’s star is rising in film and TV production, and we are home to pioneering digital firms – so it makes total sense to ensure our talent has the backing to make a splash on the national and international stage and go further to help our best have the help they need to thrive here at home.”
The year-long talent incubator programme will run from October 2026 to September 2027.
Each selected artist or collective will receive a comprehensive package of support, including investment equivalent to one year of the UK Real Living Wage, a professional development budget and tailored mentoring. Artists will also benefit from business support, help with fundraising and PR, and access to wider industry networks.
Tees Valley Artists of the Year forms part of Tees Valley Combined Authority’s wider investment to grow the region’s creative and cultural industries and visitor economy.
The successful artists will be selected through a competitive process involving panellists from leading regional cultural organisations, independent artists and creatives and the Combined Authority.
