Bonfire Night always brings back a bit of nostalgia for me. There’s something quite magical about wrapping up in your biggest winter coat, standing outside with freezing fingers, waving a sparkler around and watching the sky burst into colour.
Remember when a packet of sparklers was just as exciting as the fireworks themselves? Simple pleasures!
But, as with most things, there are two sides to the story. While some of us love a good fireworks display, others spend the evening desperately trying to calm down frightened pets, wondering when the next unexpected bang will happen. And let’s not forget those of us who would quite happily watch the whole thing from the comfort of our living rooms, preferably with a hot drink and our PJs on.
There’s also the annual reminder to be sensible. Sparklers might look harmless, but they get incredibly hot, and fireworks are certainly not something to be messing around with. A little common sense can make all the difference between a lovely evening and an unfortunate trip to A&E.
I do think there’s something special about community bonfire night events, though. Getting everyone together, supporting local displays, seeing the excitement on children’s faces and enjoying a little bit of autumn magic. Perhaps the answer is a happy medium: enjoy the fireworks, be considerate of neighbours and animals, and leave the dangerous stuff to the professionals.
So, I’m putting it to you – are you team fireworks, or team cosy night in? Either way, I hope your bonfire night is full of warmth, good company and absolutely no singed eyebrows
